Methanogens, the micro-organisms that are responsible for much of the methane production in the decay of organic matter is responsible for creating one of the more commonly available green house gasses, methane (CH4). In the absence of oxygen these mirco-organism thrive and multiply. The less oxygen, the better they go to work.
What makes wastewater the perfect environment for many of these micro-organisms is the high content of readily available organic matter and the water that separates them from the air,a potentially rich oxygen supply. While other micro-organisms compete for the available oxygen in the water, unknowingly preparing the perfect conditions for methanogens life, the methane producing organisms slowly multiply and get to work, breaking down organic matter.
Before long the aerobic (needing oxygen) organisms and bacteria have exhausted their supply of water bound oxygen and die off while the anaerobic (without oxygen) organisms and bacteria thrive. The oxygen free water acts as a great barrier, keeping fresh air away from the methanogens.
The solution:
Minimise the amount of water that gets put down the wastewater (sewage) pipes and we help out in several major ways.
1.Less water means the treatment plans need to process less wastewater. This would reduce the wastewater overflow spills occurring at many of our municipal treatment plants which in turn allows the municipalities to perform much needed maintenance.
2.Less water also means the organic matter can be exposed to oxygen sooner and the methane producing microorganism’s environment would becomes unsettled by exposure to air (oxygen) during the treatment process. (Less methane production)
3.Less water, flushed or drained, down the pipes reduces the water stress already causing havoc in many parts of our country.
Whether you are wanting the minimise your green house gas footprint (wastewater methane production),save costs on your municipal water bill,or do your part in reducing wastewater spills, sending less water down the pipes, that would ultimately just go to waste, make sense all round.
