South Africa in flood

All across the country, people living near rivers and dams have been eyeing the heavens with apprehension – more rains could trigger fresh floods.

The government has placed all emergency services on “high alert”. “Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa yesterday warned people living near dams and rivers to be cautious. “There are likely to be more threats of flooding in many parts of the country for the remainder of the rain season,” said Molewa.

The minister has already visited the Vaal Dam, the Orange River System, North West, Northern Cape and KZN’s Ladysmith and Bergville areas, which have been affected by heavy rains and flooding.

Forecaster Lulama Menze yesterday predicted an “80% chance of heavy rains and thunderstorms until Sunday. We have not issued any flood warnings yet, but should the need arise, we will do so.”

Yesterday, the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) said provinces and municipalities were still busy assessing the full extent of the damage from recent flooding.

Floods across the country have already killed 32 people. Most of these deaths were recorded in Ladysmith, KZN.  Last week, 20 people were killed, with the youngest victims being siblings Amanda Mbili, 6, and Sthembinkosi Mbili, 4. They drowned while playing near the Golokodo River, in KZN.
