Limpopo needs a lot more water for mining

THE expected large-scale mining expansion in arid Limpopo will require the province to find an additional 80million cubic metres of water a year to sustain itself.

Currently the main source of water is Mokolo Dam near the mining town of Lephalale. It is used by Eskom’s power stations and by farmers for irrigation.

Limpopo has 70% of South Africa’s remaining coal resources.

The province is well positioned to produce coal for exports as the commodity provides about 25% of the world’s primary energy, being used to generate 40% of world electricity and to produce 66% of world steel.
