Mpumalanga’s water woes could worsen

Water Restrictions Mpumalanga

The Mpumalanga province’s water woes are expected to be exacerbated if it doesn’t rain soon.

The Steve Tshwete Municipality in Middelburg has already started to apply water restrictions.

The Nkomazi Municipality has urged residents to use water sparingly – three of it’s towns are experiencing water shortages.

Water shortages plague both the province’s high-and lowveld regions.

The Middelburg dam – a catchment area for water that supplies the town, is currently at 26% capacity.

Residents have been restricted to 20 kilo-litres of water per month.

Using more could lead to a fine of up to R10 000.

Steve Tshwete Municipality’s Deputy Municipal Manager, Mandla Mnguni, “We have not received any rain in our catchment area hence this shortage of water. We have two dry dams, Middleburg Dam and also Pienaar’s Dam. We are not pumping anything, they have been closed because there is no water coming out.”

Residents say they have no choice but to comply.

“We should use water wisely, but the government should support us, it should not take water when it pleases.”

In the far eastern Mpumalanga Lowveld, the levels of the Crocodile river is so low, it’s pump station was blocked, after sucking mud from the river.
