I suppose to many this might come as a shock that such a large part of the country could be faced with water outages. I have been surprised the Southern Cape area has managed to continue supplying water to their residents. That said, it was their “rainy” season and their dams at least managed to maintain [...]
Cape Town dam levels are lower than what they have been in the past few years due a little rain. There seems to be little hope for our dams to be filling up as the long term weather forecast is once again predicting a dry week.
In the past August and September have been some of [...]
In an earlier blog I discussed what would happen if Cape Town’s water supply dried out. From the following article you will read that troops have been called in to prevent unrest in the Philippines due to a dire water shortage. This will not be the first time the military has been used to pacify thirsty crowds.
Our [...]
On reading this article published by the Daily Dispatch it struck me that there may be much truth in what this conman was leading people to believe. The Buffalo City Municipality is still and have been in dire straights over the past few months over water shortages. The reality of dirty water might not be a [...]
Last weeks rains in the greater Cape Town area have run into our dams and significantly filled dam levels however the Southern Cape is still experiencing lower than average dam levels. Now that the rainy season is steadily approaching many areas in the Western Cape, it is a truly a great time to build up a [...]
With very few exceptions all Western Cape Dam levels are still dropping. Cape Town has only seen 3 rainy days this April and the weather forecast predicts yet another dry week with 0% chance precipitation. Is Cape Town entering a lower than average rainy season?
Compared with last year’s average dam level of 55.9% the Western Cape’s [...]
The western Cape is starting to enter its rainy season. This means dam levels will be rising as they collect water to supply our region with clean water for the dryer summer months.
In the same way that our dams collect and store rain water you can now easily collect and store free water by harvesting the [...]

The following tables shows the dam levels of various dams across the country as recorded by SCIR. This weeks biggest level drop is the Roode Els Berg Dam that lost 12%. Although I do not know the cause of this massive drop, a massive drop like this can’t in any way be sustainable.

The Makana Municipality in Grahamstown may be turning green even with the severer water shortages it faces as its dams run dry. Though it is unclear from this article what specifically the “Memorandum of Understanding” is, it is great to hear that renewable energy and wind power is drawing more attention in South Africa.
Is Grahamstown [...]
